I Miss You(Front of Card)

Wherever you are is where I wish I were(Inside)

What is this? An adorable and highly appropriate card on a day other than a Sunday? (This card is perfect for that good friend or significant someone while you must be apart. (hs emphasized to honor the choice of font.))

Here’s the deal: A post will go up tomorrow, and it will be the last “daily” post. Then, I’ll be taking an indefinite hiatus to work on other projects. Hope you’ve enjoyed this month’s worth of ridiculous greeting cards! (And stay tuned for tomorrow’s.)

What’s a Birthday Card without Money Inside? December 23, 2009

What's a Birthday Card without Money Inside?(Front of Card)

This One(Inside)

I remember when one of my friends discovered that her family had agreed that all nieces and nephews would stop getting presents after their 18th birthdays. This card seems to be made for sweet 19 for that spoiled niece you never really liked.

Otherwise, you could slip those concert tickets into this card, and have a fun night out with your friend with a good sense of humor. Create family drama, or spark a fun night out: this card gives you the choice!

(Inside)

You had just been asking yourself, Self, what is the best way to gently poke fun at my aging friend who once majored in art history?

You're not getting old...(Front of Card)

...but if you're expecting a gift you are getting stupid(Inside)

Another friend, another trip to the dollar store to spend $.50 in order to remind them that there’s more to life than the capitalistic convention of birthday presents. But what is particularly clever about this card is its lion-maned protagonist. Through this protagonist, you may experience the pleasure of actually presenting your friend with a (drawn, green, oddly-shaped) present, and then snatching it away as soon as your friend opens the card! The inside text will then reminds him that he will never see what lies within that green, oddly-shaped box. Never.

How clever! you think. Perhaps this will get me yet another free birthday-money drink.

WANTED(Front of Card)

...but then I've always considered myself a bit of an outlaw(Inside)

Jokes between friends are never mean. Right? Otherwise, why would you bother having friends?

And anyway, you spent a whole $.50 on this card at the dollar store, so it’s not like you didn’t invest money in this friendship. You even remembered your friend’s (strange) obsession with cowboys, so it really couldn’t get more personal than this. Maybe he’ll even see that extra effort you put in and buy you a drink. After all, it’s his birthday; he’s probably got some extra cash burning a hole in his chaps.

There's so much about life worth celebrating...(Front of Card)

(Inside: Blank)

You bought this card to give to your dear friend, the one with whom you can celebrate the “simple joys of quiet friendship” and everything else. The front of the card so perfectly encapsulates how you feel that you can hardly imagine what else there is to say. Then you open up the card, and the blank space inside dares you to write even more. Now you must compete with that long paragraph, that page-consuming text, to legitimize your friendship. This is where you must prove to your friend that your friendship transcends this flowery store-bought sentiment into something real and tangible and true.

And after all that, you’ll inevitably write on an incline, or have some kind of pen malfunction that will remind you that the truth in your heart will never look as good as pre-packaged sentiment.

To My Special Friend(Front of Card)

It takes alot of wonderful things to make a special friend...(Inside Text)

Interestingly, this card is from “Fantusy,” which also explains its “quirky” spelling of “a lot” as the more fantustical “alot.” But what truly captivates is the look shared between our protagonists, the kitten and duck: I would like to eat you, thinks the cat. I shall fluff out my feathers so that you think I am more frightening than I really am, thinks the duck.

And that is what makes your friendship truly special.

I'm Glad We're Friends(Front of Card)

We share fun times(Inside Text)

The front of this card suggests that, metaphorically, your friendship is like bicycles cuddling. But the inside explains what the metaphor cannot–it celebrates that your friendship is strong enough to withstand an over-explanation of itself.
